Back from the SCAA Symposium and Conference in Anaheim
Again, another great Symposium Conference and Exhibition by the SCAA.
Some great lessons that when into my book.
The best cupping experience I had at the “Roasters Guild Award” cupping coffees and origins was a Peru – Puno from the Tunki Farm. This was an exciting combination of Full Body, clean and sweet impressions and evident citric notes with acidity to the finish, quite a rare combination! In fact, this coffee was a blend of Tipica, Bourbon and Caturra varietals from the same farm. Something like a Malbec, Cabernet – Sauvignon and Carmeniere grape blend. Just Outstanding!
Another great learning experience was to see how much the “Single Brew” or “Single Drip”, also known as “Manual One-Cup Pour Over” is changing the lives of consumers and the Coffee Shop environment. This “old and original” form of preparing and serving coffee has now hit many consumer’s preference and created new demand for coffee, over the known Espresso destined demand.
One – Cup Pour Over creates a strong tie between the consumer and the barista, the coffee shop and the story behind each coffee, it also adds value to the overall store revenue as it sells for more.
So, why do consumers continue to return to the stores for more ” Single Brews” when it is obvious they can repeat the same cup at home, at far lesser price, using a filter holder, paper filter, the roasted ground coffee and hot water?
The answer is; the store experience, the barista skills, the storytelling and the next featured “Micro Lots”. Something never tasted before, followed by a new story and with diverse high “Q” or SCAA quality ratings. Coffee Shops that serve the “Single Brew” are very dynamic. They serve various new micro lots every month, some change on a weekly basis, thus the demand for “New” high quality Micro Lots. It’s kind of what keeps video stores selling “New releases”.
Another important lesson at the SCAA Symposium and Conference was to discover how “Social E – Media” is promoting great coffees and overall consumption. I learned about how tens of thousands Specialty Coffee lovers, being them consumers, baristas, roast masters, journalists, cuppers, businesses and critics communicate through blogs in different e – social medias about great coffees they have tested. Specialty coffee bloggers are creating a whole new opportunity and visibility to otherwise relatively unknown coffees and origins. Many lots end up being sold in parts to micro roasters and retail roasters around the country just pushed by the bloggers comments.
As this new week starts, I have prepared an actual offer list that shows all current landed Ipanema Estate Coffees, The Nucoffee Micro lots that arrived in Oakland,
The Kona Parry Estate coffees Spot Oakland and the soon arriving Ipanema Coffees, the Ipanema ” NIMA ” 22 lbs green coffee Air Tight Atmosphere packaging and the East Coast Nucoffee ” Micro lot ” arrivals in mid May.
We are also carrying some Guatemalan Huehuetenango and some Tanzania Peaberries in Miami, take a look and revert to us if any of these coffees interest you.
Enjoy great coffees,
Christian Bendz Wolthers
