Ipanema Coffee Awarded the Outstanding Producer Award by S.C.A.E.
Good day coffee friends,
Ipanema Coffees has just been awarded the Outstanding Producer Award by S.C.A.E.!!!
The coffee harvest at the Ipanema Farms is now half-way through and this is a good time to inform about the quality and availability expectations. The normally dry harvest season in Brazil has not proven to be consistent this year. Since late May, three cold fronts followed by rains have reached the soft Arabica coffee belt.
Rains during the harvest season can compromise dramatically the quality of Brazilian coffee, being heavily loaded at the drying patios with more coffees on the way in make logistic issues become a a nightmare for farmers.
This past weekend, over 60 millimeters of rain fell in the Alfenas and Varginha regions. Hale, which is totally unexpected during the winter months struck Botelhos and the surrounding towns close to Pocos de Caldas, farmers where caught by total surprise.
On a general manner, it’s already clear that the quality of the early harvest coffees from the South of Minas and Sao Paulo Mogiana areas have suffered some negative effects from rain, hale storms and the logistic confusion that follows.
Ipanema is prepared for such weather events. High quality is the focus of their mission.
Ipanema treats all its coffees by specific maturation condition. They start the selective harvest by picking only the full mature beans – these for Full Washed and Pulped-Natural Preparations. This practice promotes the logistic viability at the patios, dryers and storage bins.
As the maturation period exceeds it’s ideal state and the fruits enter the “raisin ” state, coffees are then harvested for the Natural Preparation purposes. Finally, when the maturation follows into the dry hanging fruit, these are harvested and treated as Natural Dry Preparation.
The Estate’s quality assurance structure and trained staff are capacitated to respond to all expected and unexpected known weather conditions. Washers, pulpers, tanks, patios and dryers are able to process under normal conditions, the equivalent of 2000 – 132 lb bags per day . This structure was built to accomodate and prepare the incoming harvested from 12 million trees in an Estate with over 5.500 hectares of planted area.
67.000 square meters of solid sun drying patios, 50 horizontal drum driers with indirect steam radiator heat and 48 dark and controlled temperature wooden binds process and store up to 60.000 bags per harvest month. Each plantation lot harvested, is treated separately, this provides for select identification by altitude, maturation level, lot area, preparation and cup quality. Ipanema’s structure and expertise is unique and unmatched in such large Estate category.
Ipanema treats each customer as a singular client, Thus why they reach out and learn about the individual needs of their clients, Ipanema likes to be considered ” a green coffee solution provider”.
